We are celebrating our 10th Anniversary!
Over the past decade, Art for Animals has become one of the most unique organizations dedicated to the rescue and protection of abused and abandoned animals. We have advised many similar organizations starting up around the country and we believe that imitation is flattering. But there's one thing that makes us different: Every dollar we take in goes directly to the animals and the people who care for them. We have no overhead. Art for Animals is an entirely volunteer organization. All our money goes toward saving lives.
Art for Animals was founded in 1998 by a small group of people in the art world who recognized the connection between artists and animals. Concerned about the rising number of abandoned animals, particularly in New York City, we dedicated the organization to financing animal rescue and therefor saving the lives of animals who would have otherwise been quickly euthanized.
Since its inception, Art for Animals has distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to often volunteer-run organizations and to individual caregivers in need of support. A special program supports individuals - often elderly - on subsidized incomes who have elderly pets in need of care. AFA's directors also advise rescue groups in all stages of development. In this way, we are helping to build a stable community of rescue organizations. While our funds have primarily gone to support dogs, cats, birds and horses in dire need of medical care, we have also helped small groups obtain tax-exemption status, organize their own benefits, pay for monthly newsletters, hire pro-bono dog trainers, and complete tasks that help insure the longevity of their organizations. This is our goal: We support the rescuers so that they can do their work.
Artists - visual artists, actors, musicians, writers - have a particular passion for - and connection with - animals.
Art for Animals recognizes this passion and we work with many extraordinary people. Academy, Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award winners and nominees, music royalty, and a who's who of the visual arts world, come together through AFA to support thousands of homeless animals each year. Among our supporters, we count Laurie Anderson, Adrian Brody, Edie Falco, Tama Janowitz, Michael Graves, Mary Tyler Moore, Bebe Neuwirth, Paige Powell, Bernadette Peters, Richard Serra, Cindy Sherman, Bruce Weber and William Wegman. We thank you all - always.
Please join us. Cruise through this web page and write to us. Tell us how you want to help and send us a financial contribution!
We need your help to keep Art for Animals working. Approximately 5 million animals end up in shelters each year. This number does not count those who slip through the cracks and, we hope, are caught in the nets of those groups supported by Art for Animals.
